Product and specification guide

A short guide to describing a cable requirement.

Read a published record

Every product page on this site is built the same way. Construction lists conductor material, core count and shielding. Electrical lists rated voltage where it is published. Dimensions lists length, packaging and size. A row marked Verified is a value taken from the supplier's own listing and reviewed; a group marked Not published means no value is confirmed yet and the quotation will state it. Nothing on a record is inferred from the product family.

The terms that come up most

  • UTP / FTP / SFTP — shield construction of twisted-pair cable: none, foil, or braid with foil.
  • Copper vs CCA — solid copper conductor, or copper-clad aluminium. Some records list both as options; state which the project accepts.
  • Solid vs stranded (flexible) — the conductor form. Solid conductors suit fixed runs; stranded suits wire that is flexed or terminated by hand. Where a record could not confirm this, it says so on the Construction row.
  • Cores — the number of insulated conductors inside the sheath.
  • Rated voltage — the voltage the insulation system is designed for, as listed by the supplier.
  • Length or packaging — reel or coil length and how it is packed; custom lengths are quoted.

Describe what you know, in this order

  1. Cable family or listed model.
  2. Conductor material and, if known, size or cross-section.
  3. Core or pair count and shielding.
  4. Length per run or total quantity, and preferred packaging.
  5. Where it will be installed and the standard the installation follows.
  6. Destination and required date.

If a value is unknown, write not decided rather than a guess; the sourcing team would rather ask than assume.
