Building wiring

A clear route for fixed installation and equipment wiring enquiries.

What this route is for

Fixed wiring inside buildings — lighting and socket circuits, distribution boards, equipment feeds — is usually specified by the electrical designer against the local wiring rules. The sourcing question is then about matching a listed wire range to that specification, in the quantities and packaging the project needs.

How the listed ranges differ

  • BV is single-core building wire with a solid conductor, used where the run is fixed and not flexed after installation.
  • BVR is, in the usual naming, the flexible-conductor version of the same family, used where the wire must bend during installation or termination. The published record states what was verified for the listed item, including where the conductor form is still to be confirmed.
  • RVV is a multi-core flexible sheathed cable for connecting equipment and appliances rather than for fixed building circuits.

Each published record shows the conductor, core count, rated voltage and packaging that are verified for that item; cross-section and other sizes are confirmed in the quotation.

What to send

The circuit or equipment the wire is for, the cross-section or current rating from the design, the core count and colour requirements, the total length per size, the destination, and the wiring rules the installation must follow. If the design is still open, describe the building and its use instead.
